Bread for the World Sunday

For over 25 years First United has funded its membership in Bread for the World by bake sales during the fellowship time between worship and education.

Bread for the World celebrates 33 years of seeking justice as a Christian voice for ending hunger. Bread for the World is a nationwide Christian citizens' movement that seeks justice for the world’s hungry people by lobbying our nation’s decision makers. Bread for the World is 58,000 members strong, and growing. Members focus on using the power they have as citizens in a democracy to influence government policies affecting hungry people.

Our congregational membership in Bread for the World makes our voice heard advocating for hungry and poor people, when writing or calling members of Congress, in partnership with other Bread for the World members across the country. Bread for the World members make a difference! The commitment, energy and faith of members makes Bread for the World effective. Year after year, Bread for the World wins legislative victories for hungry people.

For example, on October 19, there was an email request to contact Senator Schumer about the Farm Bill. BFW members were asked to request that he use his leadership position to ensure there would be room for floor amendments to improve the bill to provide a safety net for ALL farmers, not just those who grow program crops, make the commodity system fairer for smaller family famers, and adequately fund vital needs in nutrition, rural development and conservation.
